Understanding the Chart

The Returns Inspector displays a portfolio’s TWRR is shown in a combination chart (described below). Both graphs on the chart share a horizontal and vertical axis. The horizontal axis measures the time passed in the date range set. That time is split into intervals (Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annually, Annually, etc.) based on the length of the date range. The vertical axis measures a portfolio’s TWRR as a percentage of the portfolio’s value at the beginning of the date range set.

Cumulative Returns Graph

The Cumulative Returns graph is a line graph that can display a portfolio’s TWRR in one of the following two ways:

  • Lifetime – Portfolio’s TWRR since its respective account’s inception date (when the account started reporting performance)

  • Relative – Portfolio’s TWRR since the first full interval that occurred in the date range set in the Date Selector (e.g. if a date range begins on 1/15/2018 and a Monthly interval is set, the widget calculates a portfolio’s TWRR since 2/1/2018)

When you sign in to Client Portal, the Returns Inspector widget is automatically set to display the Cumulative Returns graph in the Lifetime setting, but you can select either option in the Cumulative Options menu that opens when you click the left-most arrow at the top of the widget.

The Cumulative Returns graph has points, bolded circles known as interval points, marking when a period occurs. When you hover over the area corresponding with an interval point, a tooltip appears. That tooltip displays the following:

  • Date(s) relevant to the period corresponding with this point

  • Cumulative Periodic return – A portfolio’s TWRR up to that period, as calculated from the beginning of the first full interval in the date range you set (in percentage, accurate up to two decimal points)

  • Periodic Return (see below)

  • Cumulative from – The date from which calculations for the TWRR began (the first full interval in the date range you set)

  • No Holdings indicator – Appears if the portfolio had no holdings at any time during the period, including dates within the period where there were no holdings (see Gaps below)

Periodic Returns Graph

The Periodic Returns graph is a bar graph that displays a portfolio’s TWRR within periods, where each bar represents the TWRR over one period. When you hover over the area corresponding with that period a tooltip appears. That tooltip displays the following:

  • The date(s) relevant to the period corresponding with the bar

  • Cumulative return (see above)

  • Periodic return – The TWRR during that period (in percentage, accurate up to two decimal points)

  • No Holdings indicator – Appears if the portfolio had no holdings at any time during the period, including dates within the period where there were no holdings (see Gaps below)

The two graphs are displayed together to help you recognize how the returns generated by an Advisor during each period impact a portfolio’s cumulative returns.
